The ratio of sea freight to international logistics transportation (maritime saving strategy)

A few days ago, Xiaoyi received an inquiry for 5,000 prayer blankets to Karachi, Pakistan, which is of great reference value. I will share it with foreign trade partners who need international logistics and transportation.

At the beginning, the packaging details of the goods provided by the customer were 60 pieces in a large package, 60KG per package, 0.5CBM in single package, 40CBM in total, and 4200RMB/CBM in commercial quotation, which the customer thought was a bit expensive; then I suggested that the customer can make the next product Compression, so the same 5,000 pieces of goods, 85 pieces of a large package, the volume of a large package is 0.35CBM, the final total volume becomes 20CBM, and the business quotation is still 4200RMB/CBM, and the transportation cost is reduced by half. Are you surprised? Just by making a simple adjustment on the packaging, you can save half of the shipping cost of nearly 90,000 yuan. This actually involves the concept of cargo-to-weight ratio in sea freight.

Sea Freight Freight to Weight Ratio

"Sea Freight Weight Ratio" refers to the ratio between the weight and volume of the cargo, which is used to evaluate the density and space utilization of the cargo. Usually in kg/cubic meter.

The value of cargo-to-weight ratio can affect the calculation of ocean freight. In general, shipping companies will calculate the freight based on the weight and volume of the goods, and use the larger value (weight or volume) as the basis for billing to ensure their interests.

If the cargo has a high cargo weight ratio, that is, the weight is relatively large relative to the volume, the shipping company may calculate the freight based on the weight of the cargo. This means that regardless of the volume of the shipment, the shipping cost will be based on its weight. In this case, heavy goods have an advantage, because the freight mainly depends on the weight and not the volume.

On the contrary, if the cargo has a low cargo weight ratio, that is, the volume is large relative to the weight, the ocean carrier may calculate the freight based on the volume of the cargo. This means that regardless of the weight of the item, the shipping cost will be based on its volume. In this case, it is more advantageous to drop the goods, because the freight mainly depends on the volume and is not affected by the weight.

Then, can we push back the wool of the shipowner? With the same volume, can we try to compress the quality of the goods as much as possible, as long as the threshold is not exceeded, it is not considered a violation. So everyone must ask about the cargo-to-weight ratio before delivery, after all, it is more fun to squeeze.
